Skylights

Skylights are a great addition to any room. They illuminate the room and give a nice view of clouds during the day and stars at night. You might want to add a skylight to your living space or maybe you need to replace an existing skylight.

Replacing a Skylight

The most common reason to replace a skylight is because the old one is broken. Many people ask us if we can replace the dome only. Unfortunately, we can’t. All skylights in South Florida have to be tested in a wind tunnel in order to comply with the Florida Building Code (FBC). Manufacturers test the entire assembly of a skylight not just the dome and so, replacing just the dome does not meet the standard.

The second most common reason the replace a skylight is to comply with insurance wind coverage. In either case, there is a lot of work to be done. The roofing around the skylight has to be demolished in order to take the old one out. There are strict standards to installing the skylight that must be followed and the roofing assembly has to be completely rebuilt where it was removed. Its a full days work.

Domed and Tubular Skylights

Do you want to bring natural light into your home? Sunshine makes your home brighter and lifts your spirits. Lighten up your interior spaces and hard to light places with a tubular skylight or domed.

Windows are not the best solution for introducing natural light into areas in your home, and certainly not for interior spaces. Traditional skylights could be an option, if you have space on the ceiling and interested in cutting through your ceiling and truss structure, including alterations to your drywall, framing, and painting. If you want a simpler, more economical, and efficient option, consider tubular skylights.

There are two kinds of domed skylights, curb mount and self-flashing. The difference between the two is simply their installation methods. Curb mounted skylights need a curb made to secure them on. Typically, we would use 2” x 6” pressure treated lumber nailed on its side to make a curb for mounting. Self-flashing domed skylights come with an aluminum curb attached to them, so they don’t need a curb. We screw them down and seal the flange.

Domed skylights are mode with aluminum frames and acrylic domes. The dome is made of acrylic and can be clear or tinted bronze or white. In order to be more energy efficient and hurricane resistant, the skylights we use in South Florida are double domed.

Impact Resistance Skylights

All of our skylights can be upgraded to impact resistance upon request. The impact resistant skylights will meet your insurance requirements for wind mitigation

Tubular Skylights are compact and deliver a large supply of light in an energy-efficient way, making tubular skylights what could be the smartest choice for any place in your home, including hallways, bathrooms, laundry and storage rooms. Their modest styling can with your home’s décor very well. And unlike traditional skylights, tubular skylights can be installed in a quickly, they don’t require cutting and modifying your homes trusses, and only affect the roof and ceiling a little bit.

Tubular skylights are a more economical option. These skylights are installed on the roof and the “tube” runs through the attic. Finally, a small hole is cut in your ceiling in order to receive the inside lens.

Unlike traditional skylights, tubular skylights do a much better job blocking nearly all Ultra Violet rays from the Sun. This prevents fading of your furniture, flooring, carpeting and anything else. Tubular skylights also allow much, much less solar heat gain in to your home compared to traditional skylights.

Tubular Skylight are virtually maintenance free. You might want to polish up the tubular skylight dome from time to time, but it’s not required. Tubular skylights were designed enjoyed and left alone.

How big should your new Tubular Skylight be? A 10″ Tubular Skylight can light up to 150 sq. ft.. A 14″ tubular skylight can light up to 300 sq. ft. So, if you can tell us how much natural light you want in a specific area, we can help determine the ultimate size

How Much Light Do Solar Tube Skylights let in?
